Hello Old Res Friends!

We are thrilled to have been voted in by a landslide victory – in other words we are happy to have been convinced to become your new Commodores. As we stand on the bridge and take over command of the ORYC ship, we do so with appreciation for Meg and Jim Weston and their crew, who have steered the Old Res ship through our wild seas over the last two years, Together, they have worked with the Steering Committee members and kept our ship afloat! We certainly owe all of them, the Westons, Mary McDonald and Pat Stenger as VPs, Joanne and Jim Poage as Secretaries and Susan and Warren Wilson as Treasurers, debt of gratitude. All of us have enjoyed the fruits of their labor! A Big THANK YOU!!!! All of last year’s steering committee has stayed in office with the addition of Pat Gilbert, who will chair the Treasurer’s position along with Susan Wilson and Annie Epping. Welcome Pat and Annie!

Both the former Steering Committee and the 2025/2026 steering committee recently came together to pass the baton. What a wonderful and productive meeting it was. As our discussion progressed it seemed as though everyone was on the same page as we discussed how Old Res should/would proceed in the future.

Yes, as much as we might not like to admit it, we are getting older. With aging, changes are taking place, and we certainly must recognize these changes. Mobility, for example, could become a major problem for some of us. With that in mind, we agreed to use only handicap accessible sites for all Old Res Socials, with the hope of having everyone feeling comfortable getting to as well as safe attending them.

Another point of discussion was making sure that we respect everyone’s monetary comfort level. We will endeavor to keep costs low. This cannot always be achieved, but we will do our best, and if one social event runs high, then we will certainly aim to keep the next one at a reasonable rate.

There was an amazing discussion regarding the above points. Do know that every single person at the meeting was not only in agreement but also held very strong opinions about keeping our group as a kind. caring and concerned group.

Another concern was that we hope to be here for one another, especially in times of need. Many of us are ’transplants’ from elsewhere and as such many of us do not have much family nearby. Most of us have adult children but so many have moved to a new area of the country or out of the country. They are filled with ‘life’ in other ways. Let us all be aware of the needs of others and pass this news along to others. Richard Balmer, has agreed to be our “Kindness Liaison”and make certain that our kindness “ barometer” remains visible and sensitive so that all of us can help in some small way – one never knows when it will be his/her time to need assistance or caring such as driving, visiting, providing meals, etc.

Cris Carter has done such a fabulous job in keeping our website updated, and it’s so professional and easy to navigate. (Ps - Cris created the website in 2002!). It takes a great deal of time, and it is mostly a thankless job. With that said, at some point she may need to pass along this responsibility – please step forward if you believe that you can help in any way. Imagine life without the website!!! At some point the club will probably have to hire a service to take this over and it will be costly. How lucky we are to have Cris and a very big Thank You to her!!!!! (PS Please always let Cris know of any news that you’d like on the website. Please also let Mary McDonald and Pat Stenger know of news so she can send out emails, cards or flowers as circumstances suggest.)

Travel is another item which was brought up. Some ideas included boat trips such as a cruise down the St. Lawrence or Mississippi Rivers, a trip to Palm Springs, CA to visit Cris Carter and Zan and Chuck Stevens in the winter, or maybe even a river cruise in Europe (say springtime on the Seine or spring in Holland for tulips and the tulip festival). Should you have a particular interest, bring forth your ideas – they might just take flight.

We are such a terrific group of people. Old Res Yacht Club had been around for over 40 years and this is exactly why. All of us have made true and lasting friendships. Let all of us do everything we can to keep ORYC together. Wim, for example, has done a great job in setting up monthly lunches for the club. Just one example of keeping so many of us together. Everyone is invited so just let Wim know when you are interested. Thanks, Wim!

BUSINESS

The Bylaws of Old Res require everyone to work on a social committee at least once during the year. If you were not able to sign up at the annual meeting, then please see your assignment on our website’s Socail assignments page.* If you cannot work on a particular committee, then it is your responsibility to find someone with whom you can trade. Of course, as we get older, we all have less energy (well many of us) to help, but if we all pitch in, it will be easier and more fun as we work together. (Sorry to sound like a mom or a favorite teacher HA HA HA.)

REMINDERS

  • Be sure to report any news to Cris, Richard, or Mary and Pat S. - happy or sad.
  • Groups, such as book groups, should report all info to Cris to be on the website.(see groups listed on the Website)

What a wonderful club we have! Let’s continue to have a bunch of fun as we start the 2025-2026 Year!!!
